OUR STORY

The first steps were taken with Founded in 2004 by Marguerite Ryan AM, WFWIA grew from a small initiative supporting informal education in shipping containers to a trusted organisation driving grassroots change. We partner closely with Wanawake kwa Wanawake (WkW), which translates to Women for Women. It is a women-led community centre in Nairobi, to deliver locally driven, life-changing programs.

Women for Women in Africa (WFWIA) is an Australian-based, volunteer-run charity creating lasting change in Kibra—Africa’s largest informal settlements —through the power of education and training, we promote equity and development.

Our mission is Hope through Education—providing school and university sponsorships for children, and practical skills training for women that leads to employment, independence, and safety. Every program is built with the community, for the community, supporting women and families to break free from the cycle of poverty.

WFWIA and WkW offer:

  • Educational sponsorships for children who would otherwise miss out on school

  • Training programs that equip women with skills to gain employment and build confidence

  • Safe spaces for children who are at risk, and a place where women can learn, connect, and grow

  • GAP year ICT programs to prepare young people for further study and the workforce

  • Partnerships with local schools and organisations to strengthen impact

A comprehensive Information, Communication and Technology one-year program is well established to support the daily learning needs of the post-secondary students during their GAP year, as we prepare them for further tertiary study and employment.

We own and operate several community facilities in Nairobi, including training centres and a safe house for vulnerable children. Our focus on integrity, equity, and transparency ensures that all donations go directly to where they’re needed most.

Together, WFWIA and WkW are building a better future—from the inside out.
